1990 – 1999

Pavement – Slanted & Enchanted

Released: 04/20/91  (Matador)

Rating: 4.9/5.0

What can be written about this album that isn’t already out there? It’s damn near perfect and signaled the rise of one of the most influential underground acts of all time. The album is fast-paced, noisy, melodic and just plain good. Zurich Is Stained, In The Mouth A Desert, and Trigger Cut are some of the best songs ever written, period.

Nirvana – Nevermind

Released: 09/24/91  (DGC)

Rating: 3.8/5.0

The album that defined a band, a generation, a city, Kurt, and so much more. Nevermind is an album with a great reputation for all the right reasons. Nirvana’s use of loud/soft dynamics hearkened back to the Pixies, just as Cobain wanted. Cobain’s riffs are top-notch and the lyrics are some of his strongest. While the singles are what we all remember, the “filler” tracks are just as great, if not better. It holds its place as one of the best grunge albums there is.
